Membership Policy

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The Association of Commercial Professionals – Life Sciences (SAMPS) membership policy enables the association to fulfill its mission, while not excluding or alienating potential members who may fall outside of the strictest interpretation of the mission’s stated target audience. Potential members, who can add value to the association, include professionals that either perform similar commercially oriented work as SAMPS members but do not work for SAMPS member companies, or they perform commercially oriented work that is highly related to the work performed by SAMPS members.

Sustaining membership will be reserved for certain potential members including marketing and sales services providers, publishers, conference companies, and scientific associations, as well as other organizations at the discretion of the SAMPS.

MISSION

SAMPS is the premier organization of all life science commercial professionals (sales, marketing, business development, client services, commercial operations, technical support, etc.) dedicated to selling and marketing to organizations that discover, develop, and manufacture pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device, and diagnostic products and therapies.

INTRODUCTION

Although the Association of Commercial Professionals – Life Sciences (SAMPS) is primarily focused on serving the 30,000 to 60,000 people globally that work in commercial roles for life science products and services companies, such as CROs, CMOs, scientific equipment and regents manufacturers, and consultancies; membership in the association is also available to individuals in related roles.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this policy is to document membership categories and the logic around the categories, as well as provide rules for professional conduct for all members.

PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

All members will behave in accordance with SAMPS values as listed on sampssoc.org and may not behave in a manner unbefitting to the SAMPS, including but not limited to scraping email addresses of other members for their own marketing purposes. The decision to discipline a member, including revoking membership without refund of membership payment, is at the sole discretion of the SAMPS.

MEMBERS

Membership in the SAMPS is reserved for life science commercial professionals (sales, marketing, business development, client services, commercial operations, technical support, etc.) dedicated to selling and marketing to organizations (academic, government and commercial) that do research, discover, develop, and manufacture pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical device, and diagnostic products and therapies. In addition membership is available to:

SUSTAINING MEMBERS

Sustaining membership is reserved for certain potential members including marketing and sales services providers, publishers, conference companies, and scientific associations, as well as other organizations at the discretion of the SAMPS.

Sustaining membership provides organizations and individuals with the opportunity to ally themselves with the SAMPS in pursuit of providing life science commercial professionals with a dynamic forum for the exchange of knowledge through ongoing education, information resources, and opportunities for networking and professional development. Sustaining membership includes all of the benefits of membership.

Sustaining members must purchase an enhanced listing in the SAMPS supplier directory and may purchase additional sponsorship offerings. The annual cost for an enhanced listing for companies that do not have members is $125 and $50 for companies with at least one "sustaining member". The enhanced listing includes the company’s logo and a 50-word description. Sustaining members may not market or sell to other members, unless they execute a specific sponsorship agreement with the SAMPS. In addition, the rules of professional conduct described above apply to sustaining members.

A. Marketing & Sales Services Providers

Although SAMPS members can be considered customers of marketing & sales service providers; the nature of the work performed by marketing and sales service providers is often the same as the work performed by SAMPS members. Their work is focused on marketing and selling products and services to pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device companies, as well as government, non-profit, and academia institutions, just like SAMPS members.

As described above individuals who perform commercial consulting work may become standard members. Employees working for companies that perform commercial consulting work, that have more than one employee, may become sustaining members. Sample categories of marketing & sales services providers are listed below.

  1. Commercial Consulting Company Employees
  2. Marketing Communications Agency employees
  3. Market Research Firm Employees
  4. Lead Generation and Telemarketing Firm Employees
  5. Training Company Employees

B. Publishers, Conference Companies, and Scientific Associations

There are dozens of publishers, conference companies, and scientific associations that sell advertising and other services to SAMPS members and their companies. SAMPS members utilize the services of these organizations for brand awareness and lead generation activities.

Although publishers, conference companies, and scientific associations, sell advertising and other services to SAMPS member, these organizations also sell memberships and other services to the same target audience as SAMPS member companies. In addition, they allow SAMPS members to be interviewed, develop content or make presentations. Since content marketing is a major focus of SAMPS members, and these organizations sell to the same audience as SAMPS members, employees from these organizations are eligible for sustaining membership.

The list below is a sampling of other types of organizations in which employees are eligible for sustaining membership (the list is not exhaustive).

SAMPS, Sales And Marketing Professionals in Scientific research, is the first and only organization dedicated to sales and marketing professionals within the life sciences.

The association’s goal is to serve its members who work in commercial roles for life science products and services companies and associated businesses, globally.
 
SAMPS was previously named ACP-LS. We feel that SAMPS more clearly describes the membership, and will form a better foundation from which to expand this membership globally.
